A welcome haunting
Stories of ghosts and the supernatural will be among those told at the Dublin Ghost Story Festival from June 29 to July 1.
The event is to be put on by publishing house Swan River Press and will feature several writers that explore Dublin’s connection to literary ghost stories. The event will also look into the past and the writing of past gothic writers from Ireland such as JS Le Fanu and Bram Stoker.
The festival will also feature bigger names such as American author Joyce Carol Oates who has published over 40 novels and English play write and author Reggie Oliver.
It will take place in Freemason’s Hall located at 18 Molesworth Street, Dublin and admission to the festival is €50. Be prepared to get spooked!
Unfreezing Nutrition
Although many people begin their day with a nice glass of fresh orange juice, there might be a better way to get necessary vitamins and nutrients. A new study at the Laboratory of Food Colour and Quality at the University of Seville, Spain, has discovered a better way to defrost ultra-frozen orange juice.
Orange juice contains carotenoids, which when consumed is converted into Vitamin A by the body. This helps with visual acuity. Prof. Paula Mapelli-Brahm and her team have discovered that defrosting ultra-frozen orange juice by putting it in the microwave oven or leaving it out at room temperature helped the juice retain more bioaccessible carotenoids than defrosting in the refrigerator.
According to study co-author Prof. Antonio J Meléndez, that in relation to the content level carotenoids, treated juices aren’t always less healthy than fresh juices.
Swinging from tree to tree
As camping season approaches, it can be difficult to find a place to set up camp, and sometimes setting up a tent is just too much work after a day of hiking. A hammock is a fast and easy way to set up your quarters for the night.
The hammock consists traditionally of a nylon or polyester bed, either a single or a double size. It also consists of straps with carabiners that wrap around trees to hold the hammock suspended. The straps are adjustable to accommodate for different widths between trees.
Prices for a hammock can vary in price and quality, but hammocks can be purchased for less than €20. Another advantage to the hammock is that it is light weight and compacts easily. Perhaps the best part of sleeping in the hammock is the view of sleeping under the stars.
