Faith helped Irish model endure after drugs scare

An Irish model and actress has spoken of how her faith continues to be a source of strength to her after a brutal encounter with drugs.

Jane Bradbury, a native of Athy, Co. Kildare, found success in modelling in New York before making the transition to acting. However, it was in her early days as a model that Bradbury was exposed to the New York drug scene and became tempted to try LSD for the first time.

“When I was 20 I had a really bad experience with LSD and it was the last time I ever took drugs,” she says. “I hallucinated, and even months after I would have acute anxiety.”

Central to Bradbury’s recovery, she adds, was a rediscovering of her faith which gave her the strength to get past the protracted reaction to a drug which left so many others permanently damaged.

“During that time I travelled a lot through Europe and there would be these beautiful old churches in many of the cities,” she explains. “I would be drawn toward them for a sense of comfort from everything I was going through. They were places I felt at peace…When you find a faith that’s alive, well, that’s an incredible experience.”
