Europe’s bishops call for unity

European integration and unity has brought Europe’s peoples peace, security and prosperity, but these successes need to protected, according to a European bishops’ commission.

Speaking on behalf of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Community, Munich’s Cardinal Reinhard Marx expressed relief that a bailout package had prevented Greece from abandoning the Euro for its own currency, but said that no serious attempt had been made “to tackle the structural causes of the crisis” and said any new solutions must address those causes.

A new approach to European economic and financial cooperation in the EU is essential, the cardinal said, urging Europeans to unite to carry the European project forward.

“The targets set at the moment the European Union was founded are far from being met,” he said.
