Nurses and midwives representing over 130 members of their professions have said that the Irish Health Service cannot cope with abortion and have urged the public to vote ‘No’ in the upcoming referendum.

Speaking at a Press Conference in Dublin on May 4, healthcare representatives asked the electorate not to “turn our hospitals into killing grounds”, stressing that they entered this profession to save lives rather than end them.

Midwife Paula Barry read the letter the group are addressing to the Irish public and stated that introducing abortion even at a very practical level would be “gravely immoral”, adding that it will “wreck” our health service.

“As the people on the front lines of the health service, and the people who do our best for pregnant women, we know the truth: no Irish woman needs to fear being pregnant in Ireland. Our pre-natal services are amongst the best in the world. If you have a problem, we will help you, and your baby, and you will be okay,” the letter said.
