News/CNS, Gregory A. Shemitz. A call to end violence against women has been issued in Newry Cathedral Parish this week, following the death of a 28-year-old. There is growing alarm at the number of women killed in recent years, with approximately 30 deaths recorded in Northern Ireland since 2020.
The church community is lending its voice to highlight the urgent need for societal change.
Canon Francis Brown, Administrator of Newry Cathedral Parish stresses that, “violence against women and girls is not solely a matter for policing but a wider societal issue requiring collective responsibility. It calls for stronger education, early intervention, and open conversations to challenge harmful behaviours and attitudes”.
Canon Brown draws on Christian teaching, pointing to the example of Jesus Christ, who treated women with dignity and respect. His actions, including defending vulnerable women and including them among His followers, are highlighted as a model for modern society.
Community members are urged to speak out, support victims, and promote respect in relationships. There is a need for sustained action to prevent further tragedies.
