Dear Editor, As a great-grandmother I shall not be making a giddy race for the razzmatazz of the ‘Winter Carnival’, as some nowadays choose to designate Christmas.
I shall celebrate Christmas as the amazing time in history when almighty God translated into human terms as Jesus, son of Mary, foster child of Joseph, so that we would understand the true meaning of life and death.
Yes, I will enjoy sharing this promise beyond human knowledge when my family and friends rejoice in it together. Candles and holly will surround the crib, central in my sitting room; simple gifts will be exchanged, cards reminding us of the Bethleham story, Mass and prayers, memories and jokes will be shared over the traditional meal.
The poor, old, hungry and lonely will be included in our gifting; the children will be taught the ‘why’ of that. No extremes, no wealthy displays as the Master taught.
That’s how to celebrate in a way the whole world is crying out for.
Yours etc.,
Angela Macnamara,
