Bishops visit Calais ‘jungle’

English and French Church leaders along with 2000 supporters from across western Europe took part in a ‘Refugee Welcome’ day of action at Calais' refugee camp on Saturday, September 19.

Southwark’s Archbishop Peter Smith and Dr Jean-Paul Jaegar, Bishop of Arras, were joined by the Church of England Bishop of Dover, Trevor Wilmott at the camp known as the ‘Jungle’.

Describing how he had heard people tell of how their “loved ones have been killed because of their faith”, he said he also found the refugees’ attitude encouraging, and praised how they helped each other and were receiving help from volunteers.

In a statement, the bishops called on politicians “to envisage new policies that go beyond merely closing frontiers and employing increased numbers of security staff”.
