Bishop Liam McDaid, who has “blessed” people with his “wisdom, sense of humour and compassion”, marked 50 years of service in the priesthood over the weekend.

Laity and clergy came from across the Diocese of Clogher to celebrate the Mass of Thanksgiving at St Macartan’s Cathedral on Sunday, July 14.

Bishop McDaid, from Bundoran, Co. Donegal, was ordained a priest on June 15, 1969 at St Patrick’s College in Maynooth. He taught at St Macartan’s College in 1970 and later served as President from 1981 to 1989. Bishop McDaid also ministered in parishes and was Diocesan Secretary and Diocesan Chancellor from 1993 to 2010 before serving as bishop for four years.

During the homily, Bishop Larry Duffy expressed the clergy’s sadness regarding his retirement, but the diocese’s gratitude to have him as their bishop.

In his concluding remarks, Bishop Liam McDaid shared a quote from his inspiration, St Oscar Romero: “Nothing we do is complete, no set of goals and objectives includes everything. This is what we are about.”
