Speculation is growing about the future of Mount Melleray Abbey, in Co. Waterford, which closed In January 2025 after the remaining monks moved to St Joseph’s abbey in Roscrea. In August, the Cistercians confirmed they were in discussions with a “like-minded community”, calling it the start of “a new chapter” that would honour Mount Melleray’s heritage while also looking to the future.
No further details were offered, but local sources now suggest that Ave Maria University, a Catholic institution in Florida founded by Tom Monaghan of Domino’s Pizza, may be involved. The university is widely noted for its emphasis on Catholic formation, the integration of faith and reason, and a curriculum shaped by the Church’s intellectual tradition.
There is talk that Ave Maria could lease the abbey, although no formal confirmation has been provided by any of the parties involved. Bishop Phonsie Cullinan declined to comment on the matter and referred questions back to the Cistercians.
