Asia Bibi’s father calls for prison visitation rights

The father of Asia Bibi, a Pakistani Catholic woman facing the death penalty for alleged blasphemy, has filed a High Court petition demanding the right to visit his daughter after being consistently denied access since her 2010 conviction.

Sardar Mushtaq Gill, the lawyer for Bibi’s father, Soran Masih, said “It is Masih’s fundamental right to visit his daughter in jail, and this cannot be denied by jail authorities or the Punjab government”.

Authorities have given no reason for denying Masih permission to visit his daughter, whose condition he fears for, following media reports that she is suffering from internal bleeding.

Her appeal against the death sentence is currently pending in the Supreme Court.
