Dear Editor, In her article of October 6, ‘My alternative suggestions for saving the planet’, Mary Kenny praises fur coats, though creatures suffer misery for these coats.
Pope Francis says “nowadays we must forcefully reject the notion that our being created in God’s image… justifies absolute domination over other creatures” (Laudato Si’ 67).
Male chicks are ground up alive. Exported animals endure terrible suffering on arduous journeys. Cows are separated from their young as soon as they are born. Ewes that suffer complications in lambing frequently have to labour to death, as most farmers do not seek veterinary care for them.
Mary points out that Adolf Hitler was a vegetarian. People ridiculing the Catholic Church point out that Hitler was a Catholic.
As St Francis said: “If you have men who will exclude any of God’s creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.”
Yours etc.,
