1535 Society launched in Britain

Britain – The Tower of London was the venue last week for the official launch of The 1535 Society, a new initiative of the Catholic Church aimed at promoting awareness of the role of Catholic martyrs in British history.

Together with Bishop Richard Chartres of London, Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster led a ceremony to official launch the new society and announced that another important goal of the body would be the restoration of the Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula at the Tower, which contains the crypt of St Thomas More. In a joint statement, the prelates said:  “We must never forget our past if we want to walk wisely into the future. That is why it is so important that we preserve this shrine to remind us of the dangers of religious intolerance and to recall men and women of faith to the primacy of love for God which leads to love of neighbour.”
