In the Diocese of Cork and Ross, preparations are in full swing for the centenary of the first Eucharistic Procession through Cork City on June 7. The weeks leading up to the 100th anniversary will include 100 hours of Eucharistic Adoration, a diocesan mission and blessings with a relic of St Carlo Acutis.
Speaking to The Irish Catholic, Diocesan Coordinator for Youth Ministry and Digital Communications Sheila Kelleher outlined the plans for the diocesan mission which will begin in the two weeks leading up to June 7.
Among the young people from the diocese participating in the mission, a visiting Canadian team from Catholic Christian Outreach will also take part. The young missionaries will visit schools and parishes, specifically sacramental classes, said Ms Kelleher. “This diocesan mission is a unique opportunity for people across Cork and Ross to renew their faith and prepare spiritually for this historic centenary,” she shared.
“It is particularly encouraging to see young people taking a leading role, bringing energy and witness to parish communities. We hope the mission and the Eucharistic Procession will be a moment of real grace for the diocese and a visible expression of faith in the heart of the city.”
Speaking at the briefing held in the leadup to the procession on May 7, Bishop Fintan Gavin addressed priests and Parish Pastoral Council representatives, describing the centenary as “a once-in-a-lifetime moment. A moment when we will walk together with Jesus in the Eucharist, with one another, as one people of faith.”
The 100 hours of Eucharistic Adoration to celebrate the centenary will begin on June 3 at 1:30am and conclude at 10:00am on June 7, before the procession from the Cathedral of St Mary and St Anne at 3:00pm.
