Dear Editor, In reference to your story ‘Future of Irish Church rests with strong lay people’ on July 30. I think Archbishop Diarmuid Martin hasn’t put a lot of thought into this request. For at least two decades we have received no direction from our Church. The recent referendum is a typical example – not a word.
We are burdened with school fees, college fees, taxes, child-minding, low wages and high mortgages. I’m afraid Archbishop Martin is not living in the real world. Let the bishops and priests who are trained, paid and authorised to do their work i.e. say Mass and administer the sacraments, give up meetings and lectures etc. It’s all the lay people want or have time for.
Yours etc.,
May Keane,
Mount Merrion,
Co. Dublin.
