Tributes paid to Bishop Flynn

Tributes have been paid to the former Bishop of Achonry, Bishop Thomas Flynn, who died last week after nearly 60 years of service to the Church.

In his homily at the funeral Mass in Cathedral of the Annunciation and Saint Nathy in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon, Bishop Brendan Kelly said the word most often used to describe his predecessor was “kind”. “Quiet in disposition, and very discreet, a man of few words.”

Bishop Edward Daly told The Irish Catholic his former colleague was “a good and valued colleague and friend for many years”.

Bishop Joseph Duffy told the paper he was “a good community man”. “I would like to acknowledge his kindness at all times, his gentle manner and his willingness to listen and to be involved in an active way in the bishops’ conference. He was a very good colleague, very generous and co-operative.”
