The benefits of the odd glass of red wine

Moderate consumption of red wine has been associated with a number of health benefits, including a reduced incidence of coronary heart disease.

The reason for the health benefits seems to reside in a miracle compound called resveratrol. Resveratrol is a kind of super antioxidant, and many nutritionists believe it is one of the most powerful anti-aging supplements you can take.

Among its other sterling qualities, it reduces platelet aggregation, making the blood less sticky. It's also anti-inflammatory. And it inhibits the oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol, making it less likely to form plaque and cause problems. In some studies, it even seems to inhibit tumours. And, due to its function as a phytoestrogen, it may play a role in the inhibition of human breast cancer cells, although way more research is needed before we can say that with certainty.

Wines grown from grapes in cold humid climates (like Cabernet Sauvignon, or wines from Bordeaux and Canada) have higher concentrations of reservatrol than those which come from hot dry areas. Pinot Noir has the highest concentration of reservatrol, regardless of the climate in which the grapes were grown. Red wine is also relatively low in carbohydrates, so, the occasional glass with dinner will not significantly impact weight loss, assuming youíre doing everything else right.

Here are a few reasons to drink red wine (in moderation of course!):

Sleep

New research shows that red wine, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, Chianti, and Merlot, contains melatonin, which regulates the body clock, so drinking a glass of red wine before bed may help you sleep.

Longevity

Resveratrol has been shown to increase lifespan in animal studies.

Brain health

Resveratrol has been shown to protect against Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

Heart health

Red wine has been shown to reduce the risk of heart and cardiovascular disease thanks to the resveratrol and other anti-oxidants it contains.

Prostate cancer

Four or more glasses of red wine per week has been shown to reduce menís overall risk of prostate cancer by 50% and the risk of the most aggressive forms of prostate cancer by 60%.

Breast cancer

Moderate consumption of red wine is believed to lower the risk of breast cancer. However, drinking more than 1-2 alcoholic drinks per day appears to increase the risk of breast cancer in women, so moderation is key.

Tooth decay

Red wine hardens your enamel to prevent tooth decay. Hardened enamel is more resistant to the bacteria which lives on your teeth and is responsible for tooth decay.

Inflammation

Resveratrol has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which helps overall physical health since many diseases and ailments can be attributed to inflammation.

Cholesterol

Resveratrol has been found in studies to lower LDL cholesterol, while another ingredient in red wine, saponins, also have cholesterol lowering properties.
