Sinn Fein need to ‘let truth come out’ on abuse

‘Covering up the truth always comes at a cost’ says head of a leading charity dealing with victims of child abuse

The head of a leading charity dealing with victims of child abuse has echoed the words of Archbishop Diarmuid Martin that Sinn Féin must let the truth on abuse come out.

Responding to Maria Cahill’s claims of an IRA abuse cover-up Maeve Lewis, executive director with the One in Four charity, said “As the Church discovered, covering up the truth always comes at a cost and Sinn Féin need to consider that, in the end, Maíria Cahill has come forward and other victims may come forward, and covering up abuse is never the right thing to do.”

Responding to a question on Morning Ireland about what advice he would offer Gerry Adams, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin had said “I would say to anybody let the truth come out. Let the truth be investigated in a transparent, open way by the competent authorities.”

Ms Lewis told The Irish Catholic she would support what the archbishop said. “He has always been an amazing advocate for survivors of abuse in the Catholic Church and a person who insisted on full co-operation with the Murphy Commission in the Dublin diocese. He always lived with the belief that the truth must come out,” she said.
