Rugby star insists ‘faith comes first’

Scottish rugby star Euan Murray ruled himself out of selection against Wales

Scottish rugby star Euan Murray ruled himself out of selection against Wales at the weekend because of his religious beliefs. The tight-head prop decided not to play in his country’s crucial Six Nations clash because it fell on Sunday, the Christian Sabbath.

The 18-stone Glasgow-born goliath, who turned to religion while recovering from an injury in 2005, has said the most important thing in his life “will always be serving Christ”.

“I want to live my life believing and doing the things he wants and the Sabbath day is a full day. It’s not a case of a couple of hours in church then playing rugby or going down the pub, it’s the full day.”

While insisting he will continue to give his all for club and country, Murray – a qualified vet – said his faith comes first. “I believe that biblically I’ve made the right decision,” he said.
