Irishman composes music for Mother Teresa movie

An award-winning Irish composer who has written the score for a blockbuster film about Mother Teresa has said the movie will move audiences to tears.

Ciaran Hope, a native of Dunboyne, Co. Meath, who has been based in the US for 15 years, has spent the past year composing music for The Letters.

The Hollywood biopic, which is due for release in the US in March, explores the life of Mother Teresa of Calcutta through letters she wrote to her long-time friend and spiritual advisor Fr Celeste van Exem over a nearly 50-year period.

Mr Hope said the film had “tested incredibly well with audiences… people get it”.

He said the flim "is not a love story, it’s not a war movie”. However, he observed that audiences will be impressed by Mother Teresa’s determination.

“There is one specific point in the movie where everyone cries, men women – people just cry,” he said.

Mother Teresa is played by Truly, Madly, Deeply actress Juliet Stevenson, who impressed Mr Hope with her portrayal of the Catholic missionary.

“Juliet just nails the character. She is really impressive,” he said.
