Harmonica priest reaches out through music

Priest uses talents to help those struggling with mental issues

A harmonica-playing parish priest has made it his mission to reach out to those suffering from depression through his music.

Fr Paschal Moore, Parish Priest of Templeorum parish, Co. Kilkenny, is part of The Mojo Peppers Blues Band, a group of mature musicians who play regular charity gigs to help those less fortunate.

“I’ve been involved in bands for years. Over the space of about 11 years, we’ve raised about €40,000 for various Irish and international causes,” Fr Moore told The Irish Catholic.

Fr Moore’s latest band will play Ryan’s of Friary Street, Co. Kilkenny, on Friday, December 5 in aid of Samaritans.

“We are all very concerned about the amount of people who suffer from stress and anxiety in society today,” the musical priest said.

“There has been a lot of tragedy lately. I have seen it particularly in my own parish and I want to reach out to people in distress. I just hope the music will raise some awareness and help people.”

Fr Moore, a qualified psychotherapist, admits the band is great “therapy” for himself.

“It’s a lot of fun. It’s a great opportunity to get out and meet people, make new friends and be a part of the community,” he said.
