Drogheda to host St Oliver Plunkett procession

70th anniversary of a tradition

The 70th anniversary of the St Oliver Plunkett procession will take place on July 6 starting at 3pm at the Holy Family Church, Ballsgrove, Drogheda.
The annual celebration will commence with the procession of a first class relic of St Oliver Plunkett from Holy Family Church (south of the river Boyne) and proceeding three kilometres to the National Shrine of St Oliver Plunkett in St Peter’s Church, West Street, where thousands of pilgrims come to venerate his relics each year.

The procession of the relic will be accompanied by the Knights of Columbanus, members of other orders and pilgrim groups as well as the local scouting troop and representatives of local Catholic organisations.

Cardinal Seán Brady, successor of St Oliver as Archbishop of Armagh, will then celebrate Mass at 4pm, and Dom Aidan Bellenger OSB will deliver the homily. Dom Aidan is abbot of Downside Abbey, the location of St Oliver Plunkett’s tomb.
