Bishop pleads for road safety at Bank Holiday weekend

Bishop pleads for road safety at Bank Holiday weekend Bishop Fintan Monahan of Killaloe

As has become traditional at the June public holiday, Bishop Fintan Monahan has asked parishes across the country to pray for safety on the roads.

As more people travel due to the holiday, the Bishop of Killaloe will also lead a ‘blessing of the roads’ ceremony in Co. Clare on Saturday.

In a statement, Dr Monahan said that: “Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic 15 months ago, we have gained a common understanding of the vulnerability of human life like never before. We have a shared responsibility to protect human life in every context.

“Concerning road safety, there have been 46 road fatalities in the State up to today. This loss of human life is a tragedy for our society and is particularly devastating for the families and loved ones of those involved,” he said.

Bishop Monahan appealed to parishes to join in urging them “to pray for those who have lost their lives in tragic circumstances so far this year, and also to pray for the safety of all road users this long weekend.”

Following 7.00pm Mass this Saturday, in Saint Joseph’s Church, Ennis, Bishop Monahan will lead a ‘blessing of the roads’ ceremony “to pray for the protection of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians,” he said.
