‘Yes’ campaigners condemn activist who ripped ‘no’ posters down

Same-sex marriage activists have condemned “unreservedly” the tearing down of ‘no’ posters by ‘yes’ campaigners.

Yes Equality spokesperson Grainne Healy told The Irish Catholic it “is an offence to take down any poster, we unreservedly condemn any such act”.

“The campaign is focused on what this referendum is about… Yes Equality wants to reach out to every citizen and to engage them in conversation about why the referendum is important,” she said.

Her comments come after one activist tweeted that they had “ripped” down with their “bare hands” a poster from Lesson Street Bridge in Dublin bearing the slogan “children deserve a mother and a father”.

Worrying

Mothers and Fathers Matter spokesperson Keith Mills said the act was a “very worrying development”.

“Every side has a right to put up posters and these posters were put up legally. Anybody taking down posters is vandalising and trying to stop the debate,” he warned.

Mr Mills insisted that the Gardaí “should be policing this”.

“We would hope that given their involvement with the ‘yes’ campaign and the GRA’s instruction to Gardaí to vote ‘yes’ that they don’t allow this to interfere with their duty to uphold law in this referendum,” he said.
