Raising awareness of perinatal care

The mother of a child with a life-limiting condition has appealed for more attention to be paid to perinatal care.

Tracy Harking from Every Life Counts, an organisation that gives families with babies who died shortly after birth a place to share their stories, has stressed the importance of recognising “abortion alternatives”.

“Because of the way the debate has been framed, one would be forgiven for thinking there is no alternative,” she wrote. “Most people in Ireland have probably never heard of perinatal hospice care, much as most don’t really know what is meant by ‘fatal, foetal abnormality’.”

Highlighting the priesthood of the baptised

A new book aims to provide a more in-depth understanding of the royal priesthood of the faithful.

A Chosen Race, a Royal Priesthood, a Holy Nation, Aspects of the Priesthood of Baptism, was edited by Fr Joseph Briody, and contains the proceedings of last year’s Fota International Liturgy Conference. It highlights the gift and calls of Baptism and presents the Church’s rich vision for the lay apostolate. The book was launched in Cork City at the Fota IX International Liturgy Conference, which was opened by Cardinal Raymond Burke on July 9.

Trócaire assures supporters of transparency

The executive director of Trócaire has reassured supporters of the charity’s accountability and commitment to serve in the wake of the Console crisis that “shattered the nation’s trust in charities”.

“We understand that when you donate to Trócaire you are trusting us to put that donation to best use to tackle poverty and injustice overseas,” Eamon Meehan wrote. “That is a responsibility we take extremely seriously.

He reminded supporters of the charity’s transparency with accounts that are independently audited and publicly available on the charity’s website.
