The Church of the Assumption in west county Dublin is very proud of its claim to have the longest serving promoter of The Irish Catholic in Ireland. The sprightly Nicky Brennan is the proud bearer of that achievement and it will be very hard to find someone who can beat his record of over 70 years promoting the paper.
He can be found every Sunday morning at the back of his parish church, meeting and greeting the parishioners, and placing a copy of the latest news-packed issue of The Irish Catholic in their hands.
He joined the Legion of Mary in September 1940 and shortly afterwards started distributing The Irish Catholic. In 1949 he and his family moved to Ballyfermot and in his new parish continued to promote the paper. Nearly 75 years in total!
In recognition of the range of his evangelising efforts for the community and for the Catholic Church, Nicky has been conferred with one of the Church’s highest accolades – the Pope’s Bene Merenti medal for his sterling service to the Church, and for being a gentle, humble and kind human being.
