Thousands of ‘pilgrims’ to retrace ancient penitential paths Pilgrims take part in the annual pilgrimage

Thousands of pilgrims are expected to retrace their ancestral heritage during Easter as they take to Ireland’s ancient pilgrim paths.

The inaugural National Pilgrim Paths Week will see a nationwide series of pilgrim walks taking place on Ireland’s medieval penitential trails from Tuesday, March 22 to Tuesday, March 29.

Knowledgeable local guides will lead each event, outline the story of the route and explain the motivation behind the medieval pilgrimage.

Copies of the new pilgrim passport for Ireland will also be available during Pilgrim Paths Week.

Pilgrim Paths Ireland Chairman John G O’Dwyer said there has been a “remarkable renewal of interest in following the footsteps of a past”.

“The event is targeted, not only at those who enjoy exploring and learning more about the intriguing history of Ireland’s ancient tracks, but also the growing number of people seeking to escape the daily grind of life and take some time out for reflection while enjoying the great outdoors,” he said.
