Theology becoming more ‘lay centered’ – expert

A prominent Irish priest who led a global research congress on the power of theology has said Catholic theology is becoming more “lay centred”.

Prof. Eamonn Conway, outgoing President of the International Network of Societies of Catholic Theology, made his remarks after more than 40 theologians from 21 countries took part in a global research congress on the power of theology in overcoming abuses of power in the Church and society, last month in Brazil.

Speaking to The Irish Catholic, Fr Conway said: “The fact that so many people from different countries were present really contributed to providing a global perspective on Catholic theology.

“It is increasingly evident based on discussions that Catholic theology is becoming more lay centred.”

The conference, which formed part of the triennial Congress of the International Network of Societies of Catholic Theology, was held in light of Pope Francis’ call for a renewal and reform of the Church’s mission.

Irish Catholics raised US$50,000 to provide 25 theologians and scholars from developing countries with a grant towards their travel costs enabling them to take part.
