The Pro Life Campaign (PLC) has welcomed the launch of an appeal for a hearing of the ‘One of Us’ petition against human embryo research in Europe.
Following the May rejection of the 1.8 million-strong petition, the largest in European history, by the EU Commission, organisers of ‘One of Us’ lodged an appeal with the General Court of the European Union in Luxembourg on July 25.
Rejection
Describing that rejection as “cynical” and a “contempt” for the voices of EU citizens, the PLC’s Cora Sherlock told The Irish Catholic this week: “The organisers of the petition are absolutely right to challenge what has happened and they deserve our support in following this one through to the end.”
Meanwhile, the PLC has accused Justice Minister Francis Fitzgerald of a “disgusting slur” for comments she made against colleagues who quit Fine Gael over the Abortion Bill.
In the course of a radio interview on Tuesday, the minister expressed disbelief that the TDs had opted for that response to the legislation.
“It’s a particularly shameful and disgusting slur for Minister Fitzgerald to turn around and accuse her former colleagues of leaving Fine Gael over legislation ‘to save women’s lives’,” a spokesperson for PLC said. “Minister Fitzgerald knows perfectly well that the Government of which she is part of introduced abortion in the case of threatened suicide even though there is no medical evidence
to back it up.”
