SVP calls for ‘urgent action’ on poverty risk

750,000 people at risk

The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) has called on the Government to protect social welfare rates as numbers of ‘at risk’ people seeking charitable help continues to rise.

In a Budget submission to Government, the SVP revealed this week that more than 750,000 people are now at risk of poverty as inflation catches up with those already struggling to make ends meet.

The society pointed out that its figures included employed people in low income jobs who are now faced with the added pressures of water and household tax.
