Simple solutions to decorating small spaces

Decorating apartments can be tricky business. Unlike many houses, you can’t change the size of your apartment. You can, however, make the most of your space and have fun doing it.

Storage space in apartments is always a major issue. Containers are a great way to store anything from clothes to Christmas decorations. These can slide right under your bed or can be stacked on top of each other in a closet or a wardrobe. You don’t want rooms to be overcrowded either, so storage containers are an ideal way of keeping your apartment tidy and maximising space.

Shelving is a clever way to organise an apartment. Simple floating shelves can transform a living room wall. Decorate them with anything from picture frames to house plants. They can be stylish way of adding depth to a flat wall. Mounting a TV on a wall will also create a more spacious feel.

Painting walls particular colours can give a room some real personality, but remember that strong primary colours like blue and red can overpower a small space. Use tester size pots before making your decision on a colour. Stick to neutral colours in bedrooms as they aid sleep and relaxation.

Different sized lamps can brighten up corners, making a small, dark room feel warm and inviting. Matching lamps at either end of your couch can be a really elegant touch. Make sure to dress lamps with attractive lampshades – they can be a real statement piece.

Functional furniture

Mirrors are a great way of adding depth to a room or a hallway. Full to mid length, they can make a small space seem bigger. Don’t throw out old mirrors – change them up by simply painting or spraying them to match your new colour scheme.

Functional furniture is essential in any apartment, just make sure to take measurements before you choose. Oversized furniture can drown a room, whereas small pieces become lost.

Side tables and coffee tables don’t need to match. Different pieces can actually add character to a room.

In most apartments, the living room and kitchen are usually attached. Try placing a couch or chair between the two can help split them up.

Remember, before you decorate your apartment, make sure you have a vision of how you want it to look.

Avoid bad decisions by knowing what you want before you begin your makeover.
