SF under pressure to clarify abortion policy

SDLP Health Spokesperson Fearghal McKinney criticised the inclusion of the SDLP on an official letter from Sinn Féin attempting to explain their policy on abortion.

Sinn Féin is coming under increasing pressure to clarify its position on abortion after the party ‘disingenuously’ attempted to equate its policy on the issue with the SDLP’s pro-life stance.

Speaking to The Irish Catholic, SDLP Health Spokesperson Fearghal McKinney criticised the inclusion of the SDLP on an official letter from Sinn Féin attempting to explain their policy on abortion.

“The SDLP is a pro-life party and this has been ratified at our party conference last year. Sinn Féin, in a recent letter attempting to clarify their position on abortion, equated their policy to ours. This is not the case.

“Sinn Féin are being very disingenuous on the issue. They pretend to be one thing and then they do the other. It’s very opportunistic,” he claimed.

Meanwhile, a leading pro-life group in the North have launched a province-wide leaflet campaign urging the public to vote only for candidates who oppose abortion.

In the run up to the European and Local Council Elections on May 22, thousands of leaflets will be distributed by members of Precious Life across Northern Ireland.

The group wants voters to ask candidates to promise to oppose abortion and defend the right to life of unborn children. The leaflet also directs voters to the group’s website which will ‘name and shame’ pro-abortion candidates.
