Marian youth conference books out

Hundreds attended the annual Catholic Youth Conference organised by the Legion of Mary in Dublin.

While many young revellers spent last weekend at the Electric Picnic music festival, a group of about 250 young people attended the annual Catholic Youth Conference organised by the Legion of Mary in Dublin.

Under the theme ‘Why is there something about Mary?’ a full programme of talks, testimonies, liturgies, social interaction, workshops and Confession took place over two days at All Hallows College.

Speakers included Fr John Harris OP and Marion Carroll, who gave a testimony of her experience from being on a stretcher suffering from MS to walking again after a visit to Knock Shrine.

Ex-Manchester United and Northern Ireland footballer Philip Mulryne, who is now studying for the priesthood with the Dominicans, spoke of his experience of working with manager Alex Ferguson and how his concern for propriety still resonates with him as a young Catholic.

Activities

Other activities over the weekend included a bus trip to Frank Duff’s house and the Legion homeless hostels. Proceedings were finished off with a packed concert by Elation ministries on Saturday night.

Papal Nuncio Archbishop Charles Brown celebrated Mass on Sunday with 12 priests from around Ireland and encouraged the young people to look at their personal prayer life.

He joined the panel including Catriona Curran of Catholic Comment, Michael Kelly of The Irish Catholic and Fr Brian McKevitt from Alive to discuss contrasting styles in dealing with the media and Catholic concerns for young people.
