Humble hero enters hall of fame

The Catholic faith is the greatest gift any mother could give her child, according to a new inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Speaking at the induction ceremony, 12-time All-Star and former National League Rookie of the Year Mike Piazza thanked his mother “for the greatest gift a mother could give a child, the gift of my Catholic faith”, continuing, “this has had a profound impact on my career and has given me patience, compassion and hope. Pope Benedict XVI said, ‘One who has hope lives differently.’”

Faith

Mr Piazza, who famously played for the New York Mets and the L.A. Dodgers, as well as shorter spells with other teams, has spoken openly about his faith before, even claiming that spirituality is necessary for him because, he has said, baseball is “a game based on failure”, where “if you fail seven out of 10 times, you’re a success”.

He has also spoken in the past of his devotion to Mary, his commitment to participation at Mass, even at busy times of the season, and the need for humility, describing it as almost forgotten in public life.

“The media doesn’t want humble people now – they want dysfunctional, loud, boisterous very obnoxious people,” he said, “And you’re seeing a lot of that.”
