Ennis priest to make world record attempt

New challenge inspired by Pope Francis

A young priest based in Co. Clare has set himself the fitness challenge of breaking the Guinness World Record for rowing, in order to fundraise for local charities.

Inspired by Pope Francis’ message to “go out into the streets”, Fr Ger Fitzgerald (pictured) will attempt to break the current world record on a land rowing machine of 5,278.5 kms  at the end of this month to raise money for Clare Haven, who support victims of domestic abuse, and Bushy Park Addiction Treatment Centre, who he said “both do heroic work”.

Fr Fitzgerald, originally from Castleconnell, Co. Limerick but serving in Ennis, was ordained in 2011 and at 34 years is one of the youngest priests in Ireland.

Last summer he cycled 30 miles every day for 30 days to raise €6,000 for Barnardos and at Christmas he did a sleep-out in Ennis to show solidarity with the homeless.

Volunteers

Fr Fitzgerald is looking for volunteers to help with log books and recordings for his challenge in order to meet the requirements of the Guinness Book of World Records, but also sponsorship for the fundraiser.
