Catholic schools cover ‘what’s really important in life’ – Ger Brennan
All-Ireland champion footballer and teacher Ger Brennan has spoken out in defence of Catholic schools, claiming they provide a more holistic approach to education than that of non-denominational schools.
Responding to questions by The Irish Catholic at the launch of Catholic Schools Week, the Dublin football star said Catholic education furnishes young students with “the skills to pray, to reflect, and to look at what’s really important in life”.
Mr Brennan said Catholic schools offer a holistic approach to education which “involves spending time reflecting and discerning about the invisible reality” which he summed up as “my soul, my spirit, my faith in Jesus Christ”.
He said that, while school “teaches you about science, teaches you about maths and everything else, history and languages, I think to enable young students to have the skills to pray, to reflect, and to look at what’s really important in life, I think that’s one of the key components or key characteristics which makes Catholic school very different to non-denominational schools”.
