Church asking too little of youth – Bishop McKeown

Bishop Donal McKeown addressed the Little Way Novena in Derry

Do many young people fail to be interested in the Church, not because it asks too much, but because it seems to ask too little? Bishop Donal McKeown posed this question during his talk last Sunday for the 13th Little Way Novena in St Eugene’s Cathedral, Derry, in honour of St Therese of Lisieux.

He said if we are to be “a missionary Church that burns with a passion to bring God’s mercy, forgiveness and love where they are most needed, then we need to be asking young people like Therese to be heroes for Christ”.

Saying that while Therese had known lots of “flawed priests and religious”, her focus had always been on what God wants the Church to be, Bishop McKeown suggested that today she would encourage us to “focus on the goodness of God”, and ask us to consider whether “the Church places enough emphasis on the need to hear the voice of the Good Shepherd”.
