Arrests in Egypt after Bishop attacked

Gunmen fire on Coptic prelate in Minya

Egypt – Police in Minya have arrested a number of men following a September 30 gun attack on a Coptic bishop in the area. Bishop Anba Makarios (pictured) was targeted in the village of al Serw as he drove to meet with the family of a Christian man murdered during the recent Muslim Brotherhood violence that rocked the nation. When the bishops’ driver managed to force a way from the ambush set for the prelate, gunmen followed to a house where the Christians sought shelter and fired on the building for an hour before authorities arrived on scene.

Bishop Makarios said the attack demonstrated “the need for a sufficient level of law and order be restored because every Egyptian deserves to receive equal protection under that law”.
